Welcome Letter and Biography

  • Catherine MacGregor, President, Drilling Group, Schlumberger Limited

    Dear Colleagues

As the new Conference Chair, I am delighted to introduce our themes for the submission of technical papers, to be presented at the SPE Offshore Europe Conference and Exhibition 2017.

SPE Offshore Europe is long established as an industry-leading oil and gas conference and exhibition. Over the past 40 years this flagship event has built up a proud heritage and unrivalled platform for the industry to meet, discuss and debate the issues of today and tomorrow - within Europe and beyond.

For some time now, the industry’s technical and financial performance has been challenged. Learning the lessons from the most severe downturn in the industry for the past 30 years, there is no doubt that the industry has to reinvent itself. The traditional industry response to market downturns, which has included halting exploration investment, decreasing development activity, pressing for pricing reductions throughout the supply chain, and letting talented people go, is no longer viable.

The current situation is an opportunity for the industry to rethink beyond just costefficiency and embrace new technologies, new types of collaborations and business models, as well as different ways of working that lead to new, sustainable outcomes.

With a central theme of ‘Embracing New Realities: Reinventing our Industry’, SPE Offshore Europe 2017 technical and keynote panel sessions - combined with business breakfasts and topical lunches - will provide a unique opportunity to debate our future and share inspirational examples that can shape the future of our industry.

Building on the success of previous conferences, I am honoured to have the opportunity to chair the 2017 programme, which will no doubt be another landmark in the history of SPE Offshore Europe.

I look forward to reviewing your proposals as we influence and shape the content of this technical programme for the year ahead.

    Catherine MacGregor
SPE Offshore Europe 2017 Executive Committee Chair
